Second, Congratulations from the bottom of my little Jenell <3 to the Design Divas of 2009.
Walk with your heads high because you deserve to do so. Work hard, play harder. Love the life you live, and live the life you love. AND REMEMBER, you learn more from a critique than a compliment :)
One of my favorite typefaces has a story - MrsEaves Check it out!
MrsEaves This typeface is named after Sarah Eaves, the woman who became John Baskerville’s wife. As Baskerville was setting up his printing and type business, Mrs. Eaves moved in with him as a live-in housekeeper, eventually becoming his wife after the death of her first husband, Mr. Eaves. Like the widows of Caslon, Bodoni, and the daughters of Fournier, Sarah similarly completed the printing of the unfinished volumes that John Baskerville left upon his death.
Anywho, I decided to do two word its for the word Short for the month of February!
As you know, and if you do not here you go, February is Black History month! Obama kind of took that to a new level, but I wanted to do something for BHM - I decided to showcase young talent who lived very short lives!
Ah, the wonderful world of Tutorials! I received some cool how-to do this quick and easy tips from D. I chose to do number 71, which was a tutorial about making WOOD! lol
Found this to be a lot easier than I thought. I had to pull on some Photoshop filters unbeknownst to me, only because I try to stay out of Photoshop, unless I have to be there!
Number 71 :D by j. gily looks like this: not too bad!
I looked for more tutorials, I had been doing them before #71! But I really like this whole texture thing, so I found a few that were cool. Here is one that I will probably use something similar on CherryBomb!
I really like one page layouts. I also figured because there is SO MUCH information that is going to be on this site, a user should not be weighed down by ever-changing design!
As I always say attitude is everything! And as you know I am working on a website, I initially wanted to call it Rotten Apples - seriously, don't ask! But I have changed my mind.
I realized I am always pushing others to step outside of their box. I kind of also realized that my work is sometimes, really serious, and with the serious content that goes along with web and design, and putting the two together, I am going to do something a bit.. uh fun and less serious!
Take a lookey - I only decided to go with two mood boards, at first I had a few, but I spent so much time on particular ones, I neglected the others, which was obvious.
Attitude is EVERYTHING! I have been looking around the web, trying to basically find other things geared towards my audience (web designers, graphic designers, and anyone who loves art.web. and design)
I decided to look for sites that portray what I want my site to portray:
Clean
Funky/Eclectic/Organic (They way Amy Winehouse music sounds ie before the drugs got bad)
Pictured below, as stated before in the previous blog are my wire frames for Rotten Apples -
A wire frame is basically a template of how I am going to lay out my information. It has nothing really to do with design, but is sort of a blueprint of where I will possibly place things like navigation, content, and logos!
When designing a website, there a few steps you should take before diving into Dreaweaver.
>What is your site about? Seriously, what is the purpose, if you don't have one, it ends up being a waste of time! Research and get ready to plan before you design. My Topic/Audience: New Webbies, like me!
>Organize and Consolidate? Take all the information you got and put it together, so you and other people can enjoy and understand easily. You can do this via a site map. (pictured above)
>Templates? A wireframe can help with that. This is a way to start planning the look of your site's content. You can see an example in the following blog.
>Attitude! Find out what attitude you want your site to portray. Look into how other people tackle the subject. Do you want it to be a certain way for your audience, will it appeal to them or turn them off?
>CREATE! ow! Dig into designing, you have your content, its organized, and you know how to organize it so it can be comprehended! Why wait? Start the best part, the creative design.
Coming soon... Rotten Apples - Sustenance for your Web Design Appetite -
Run rapidly across the stage! Entertain your family etc etc.
What to do next. Look for a job!
I hope you started this search a long time ago, but if you did not, start NOW!
It seems now that people are expecting Graphic Designers, did you see the Graphic before Designer? Okay, great! Well, most employers are blending Graphic Designer with Web Designer, the two are practically synonymous.
Learning web should be placed right along with making sure you save your print files correctly, doing publications in Indesign, and manipulating type and illustrations in Illustrator.
These are a few websites that can help you in your job searching if you do not know where to start!
If you go Spain, you may want to learn Spanish. If you go to Mars, you may even want to learn a little Martian.
When you are dealing with the web, knowing certain terms and lingo could prevent you from making a fool from yourself! Nobody wants to be remembered as the girl who thought Javascript had something to do with coffee.
Just like everyone else, I have favorites. Art and Design is subjective, Web is no exception.
Some Terms that you may run into more than others, well I know I have run into them more than I do people I am trying to avoid, are as follows:
CSS Javascript (not to be confused with Java) Sitemap Cross Browser Compatibility
